Learners had a great time with Pumpkin Math today. Learners made predictions about the weight, circumference and number of seeds for three different size pumpkins. Then, they were able to discover if their predictions were correct.
We have had a great week in 2B. We have worked on identifying non-fiction text features, reading non-fiction books, practicing new spelling words, playing new math games and working together to build bridges! We also had our first guest speakers of the year. Mrs. Mikkelsen and Mrs. Hux talked to all of the 2nd graders about leadership qualities. We have kicked off our new unit, How We Organize Ourselves. In this unit, learners will learn all about leadership qualities and about specific leaders in our world. Here are some learners working on identifying non-fiction text features to complete a fiction vs. non-fiction sort. We introduced two new ways of practicing spelling words this week. "Dictionary Hunt" and "Spelling Sentences." Learners loved playing a math game where they had to work in groups to find the sum of four numbers. Today, learners worked in groups to create bridges. Their challenge was to choose materials that could make a bridge that would hold the weight of four dictionaries. They had to use the leadership qualities we have been discussing to work with their team and create a successful bridge. It was a lot of fun!
We had a great time at the Second Grade Arts Showcase. Learners worked so hard to prepare their portfolios and drama presentations. Throughout our first unit we worked on many different ways of self expression including various types of art, poetry, creative writing and drama. Today, we also learned that some things can be a solid and a liquid at the same time! Learners made their very own Oobleck.
